Description of the Night Watchman Tour
Night is the time of ghosts, bats, and demons. The romantic costumed tour is conducted in ancient language and is designed in a historical style. The starting point of the nighttime tour is St. Nicholas Church in the historic Nikolai Quater district of Old Berlin. The Night Watchman Tour showcases the important buildings of the romantic district, such as the Lessing House, the Tavern to the Rippe, and the Court Arbor. Adjacent buildings such as the Red Town Hall and Cölln Castle are also visited. The tour ends in the Nikolaiviertel near the starting point.
History of the Nikolai Quater
In the Middle Ages, Berlin consisted of four districts. The Nikolai Quarter is the oldest of these. It is home to the gothic St. Nicholas Church, the oldest church in the city. Upon entering the quarter, you leave the main streets of modern Berlin behind you. In the romance of the night, you find another, long-gone world. Time seems to stand still here with the old lanterns and baroque houses. The Nikolai Quater is the most important part of Berlin's old town and was restored for the city's anniversary in 1987.

Greetings, noble lords, noble lady!
My name is Frederik. I come from the old Kröger night watchman family in Berlin. I am the official night watchman in Berlin's Nikolaiviertel district. Follow me on my next watch duty through old Berlin at night. See what it used to be like here. Hear the old night watchman's song with me. Learn about gruesome stories from our ancient city chronicle. Discover the romantic house of the writer Gotthold Ephraim Lessing in my neighborhood. Learn about medieval justice at the Court Arbor, as it was in my time, and how a thief had to endure some hardship in the pillory. Tremble at the apparitions of ghosts in the Electoral Palace in Cölln on the Spree. Now, at these old locations, you'll hear about Berlin legends like the one about the giant or how the alchemist Johann Friedrich Böttger transformed silver into gold here at Molkenmarkt in anno domini 1701.
I look forward to your visits here in the Nikolaiviertel and in Old Berlin.
